Our Maths Curriculum

At Pilgrims' Way, we follow a mastery curriculum and use the White Rose scheme to support this. This approach helps our children to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through small, carefully sequenced steps.

We work with the Kent and Medway Maths Hub for support and training.

Our aims are for every child to have:

• An in-depth understanding of mathematical concepts.

• A positive attitude towards maths.

• Competence and confidence in mathematical knowledge, concepts and skills.

• Fluency in the fundamentals of maths.

• Initiative and an ability to work both independently and in cooperation with others.

• An ability to communicate mathematically.

• An ability to use and apply maths across the curriculum and in real life.

How we teach Maths

We use a “Concrete - Pictorial - Abstract” (CPA) approach:

  1. Concrete: Hands-on learning with objects and manipulatives.

  2. Pictorial: Using images, diagrams, and bar models to represent problems.

  3. Abstract: Recording and working with numbers and symbols.

This ensures children gain both confidence and understanding at each stage.

Progression Across School

Here’s how key maths skills build through White Rose Maths:

  • EYFS: Early number, counting, shapes, and patterns.

  • KS1 (Years 1-2): Place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, measurement.

  • LKS2 (Years 3-4): Larger numbers, times tables, fractions/decimals, area/perimeter.

  • UKS2 (Years 5-6): Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and algebra.

Mastering Number

We deliver Mastering Number; a research-based teaching tool developed by the NCETM to enhance early understanding of number in Early Years, Keystage One and Lower Keystage Two.
