Protected Characteristics
Protected Characteristics at Pilgrims’ Way Primary School
At Pilgrims’ Way Primary School, we are proud to be a welcoming and inclusive school community. We believe that every child, staff member, and parent should be treated with dignity and respect. To support this, we actively promote awareness and understanding of the Protected Characteristics as set out in the Equality Act 2010.
What Are Protected Characteristics?
The Equality Act identifies nine Protected Characteristics. It is against the law to discriminate against someone based on any of the following:
-
Age
-
Disability
-
Gender reassignment
-
Marriage and civil partnership
-
Pregnancy and maternity
-
Race
-
Religion or belief
-
Sex
-
Sexual orientation
How We Promote These Values in School
At Pilgrims’ Way, these characteristics are woven into our school life in a variety of ways:
-
Our curriculum includes learning about different cultures, beliefs, and family structures.
-
Assemblies, classroom discussions, and PSHE lessons highlight the importance of equality, fairness, and respect.
-
We celebrate diversity through our curriculum and celebrations.
-
Staff receive training on equality and inclusion to help support all pupils effectively.
-
We take any incidents of bullying, discrimination or unfair treatment seriously and act promptly.
We believe in teaching children to value everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from. By doing this, we help prepare our pupils to be kind, responsible, and confident citizens in the wider world.
Please see attached documents for more information about how our PSHE curriculum (supported by Jigsaw) ensures coverage of the equality act and protected characteristics.
