British Values Statement

British Values at Pilgrims’ Way Primary School, Canterbury

Welcome to our British Values page. At Pilgrims’ Way Primary School, we are committed to preparing our children for life in modern Britain by promoting the fundamental British Values as defined by the Department for Education.

These values are:

1. Democracy

We encourage all our pupils to understand how democracy works. Through our School Council, children have the opportunity to be elected by their peers, express their views, and help shape decisions within the school. We teach pupils to respect everyone's voice and understand that opinions can differ.

2. The Rule of Law

Our school places great importance on rules and routines, helping children understand why laws exist and how they protect us. We work closely with local authorities, such as the police and fire service, to reinforce the importance of rules in both school and society. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws and the consequences of breaking them.

3. Individual Liberty

We promote a safe and supportive environment where children are encouraged to make choices and understand their rights and personal freedoms. From choosing how to learn in the classroom to engaging in extra-curricular activities, pupils are empowered to follow their interests while learning to make responsible choices.

4. Mutual Respect

Respect is one of our school’s core values. Children learn to treat others with kindness and consideration, no matter their background or beliefs. Respect is embedded in everything we do — from classroom discussions to playground interactions.

5. Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We actively promote diversity through our curriculum, assemblies, celebrations, and special events. Our RE (Religious Education) lessons and multicultural focus give children opportunities to learn about and celebrate a wide range of faiths and cultures. We encourage open-mindedness, curiosity, and respect for everyone.

At Pilgrims’ Way, these values are not just taught — they are lived. They guide how we behave, how we treat one another, and how we build a caring and inclusive community.

If you’d like to learn more about how we embed British Values into school life, or if you have any questions, please contact the school office or speak to your child’s class teacher.

Together, we are shaping respectful, responsible, and thoughtful citizens of tomorrow.
