Year 4 - Badger Class

Welcome to Badger Class

Class Teacher: Mr Chappell

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Chongbang

Here you will find out about each of the term's learning enquiries, special dates for your diary, PE days and forest school days.

Welcome back to another term in Badger Class. I can't wait to hear about your holiday activities and to get started on our next learning journey. Last term, we had great fun learning about how children's lives have changed over hundreds of years, learning about the digestive system and building slingshot car models in DT.

Enquiry Question

Why do so many people in the world live in megacities?

In Term 2 we are looking at our geography enquiry, answering the question, 'why do so many people in the world live in megacities?'. Throughout this topic, we will be learning what makes a city a 'megacity'. We will look at the benefits of megacities as opposed to smaller cities/towns and village life. We will locate the megacities around the world and compare the population statistics. We will look at the world's first ever megacity - Baghdad. It is a truly incredible look at the way humans organise themselves in the world.

Forest School and PE Days

Last term, we had a great time at Forest School. We built dens, role-played working in the workhouse and re-enacted events from our story of 'Street Child'. This term we hope to continue our extracurricular learning and take even more of our class learning into the outside world.

Every year group has the opportunity to take part in forest school. We are very lucky to have Mr Walsh, our forest school leader, who runs and prepares the activities for the children in this time. We will be completing this in 3 week blocks. The dates for Badger class are:

Thursday 28th November

Thursday 5th December

Thursday 12th December

Please make sure your child brings their Forest School kit on these days to avoid disappointment. Please be prepared for the British weather and have the appropriate clothing for the day, like wellies, a coat, a jumper and jeans. The weather is becoming colder now, so an extra layer will be needed, and I'm sure it will be much appreciated by the children.

Note: Wellies should be in school at all times, so the children can interact with the outdoor activity stations.

Our PE days are also important and require children to have their school PE kits. Ideally, we would like these to stay in the children's lockers, so they are available when we need them. Our PE day this term is on a Friday (outdoors) where we will be learning the skills and game of tag rugby. Please can we ensure children are wearing appropriate footwear, along with their school PE clothes.

Home Learning and Reading

Times Tables Rock Stars – Times Tables Rock Stars

All children should know their usernames and passwords, to be able to access their Spelling Shed and TTRockstars accounts. Home learning challenges will be set up through these platforms for the children to complete. If you are unsure, please let me know and I can recover these for you.

All children will also have a home reading record and will be expected to read frequently throughout the week, completing reading quizzes whilst in school and changing their reading books throughout the term. Home records will need to be in school every day to be checked and also, so the class adults can listen to their reading throughout the week.

Dojo points will be awarded to those who are completing these tasks, which can then be used to redeem class awards. Points mean prizes!

If you ever have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to contact me or speak with one of the class team members who will be happy to help.  We will be available before and after school or, alternatively, you can email me on the Class Dojos to arrange a meeting.

We look forward to starting this amazing journey with you in year 4.
