Welcome to Otter class

Welcome to our Year 5 learning update! We are excited to share what the children will be exploring across the curriculum this term. Our aim is to provide engaging, meaningful learning experiences by linking subjects together wherever possible.
English
In English, we are studying Treason by Berlie Doherty, a gripping historical novel set in Tudor times. The children are developing their reading, writing and discussion skills through this text.
To deepen their understanding, pupils will:
- Explore characters, themes and historical context
- Create and record their own podcasts, sharing their ideas and interpretations
- Develop speaking and listening skills through collaborative discussion
This creative approach allows children to communicate their learning in an exciting and modern way.
History Link – The Tudors
Our English work links closely with our History topic on The Tudors. Through both subjects, the children will:
- Learn about key events and figures from Tudor England
- Explore what life was like during this period
- Make connections between historical facts and the story of Treason
This cross-curricular approach helps bring history to life and deepens understanding.
Science
In Science, we are exploring two fascinating topics:
Forces
- Investigating how forces affect movement
- Understanding gravity, friction and air resistance
- Carrying out practical experiments
Space
- Learning about the solar system
- Understanding the movement of planets
- Exploring day and night and the phases of the moon
These topics encourage curiosity and scientific thinking through hands-on learning.
Design & Technology (D&T)
In D&T, we are focusing on mechanical systems, including:
- Pulleys
- Gears
- Levers and linkages
Children will design, build and evaluate their own creations, gaining valuable problem-solving and engineering skills.
Physical Education (PE)
This term in PE, we are developing our multiskills. Pupils will:
- Practise coordination, agility and teamwork
- Take part in a range of fun physical activities
- Work collaboratively with both Year 5 classes
These sessions promote fitness, confidence and cooperation. Our PE day is on a Monday.
PSHE
In PSHE, our topic is “Changing Me”. Children will:
- Explore how we grow and change over time
- Understand emotional and physical changes
- Develop self-awareness and resilience
This supports pupils’ wellbeing and personal development.
Bringing Learning Together
We are especially excited about how our curriculum links together this term. By connecting subjects such as English and History, and combining practical and creative learning approaches, we aim to provide an enriched and engaging experience for all children.
