Term 6

This term we will be learning about climate change and its effects on people around the world. We will look at case studies of 4 different locations, including the UK, to see how humans have to adapt to the changing climate.

Our maths learning will include decimals, converting units and volume. We will be learning all about art installations and creating our own miniature version. Our science focuses on how people develop and age - this unit will generate a lot of questions from the children, so please reach out if you would like any more information.

Our main reading text this term will be 'Animals of Farthing Wood' by Colin Dann.

 

This amazing story is based on British woodland animals having to move their homes as humans expand into the wood and begin tearing trees down to build houses. This links with a lot of our learning this year and our climate change learning.

 

Please note that our P.E days this term will be Tuesday and Friday afternoons.

The children should wear uniform to school with their P.E kits in bags on those days.

Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E kit, clearly labelled with their name and in a bag which can be kept in their locker. This must include a t-shirt in their house colour, black shorts or tracksuit bottoms and trainers/plimsolls. 

Forest School days are: Monday 1st, 8th and 15th July.

Be prepared to get muddy and bring wellies or old trainers that can get dirty. The children should wear their forest school kit to school for the whole day.

Homework will be sent home on Fridays and is due in by the following Thursday. A number of homework tasks will be set in Week 1 - the children are to complete any/as many tasks as they would like each week. Extra topic homework can be completed for extra dojos whenever you would like.

  

Term 1

We learnt about Ancient Greece and Space - two incredible topics to start the year. In maths, we have looked at place value, addition and subtraction and factors and multiples. In English, we have written non-chronological reports on Jupiter and diaries as the main character of our reading story. We also completed a great oracy week about pirates.

Term 2

We learnt about space. We learnt about life on a volcano, with a focus on the islands of Iceland.

Our book for term 1 and 2 was 'Who Let The Gods Out?', an exciting story about a boy who meets Virgo, a star constellation, who crashes to Earth. We will follow their adventures and learn about some ancient gods and myths along the way.

Term 3

We learnt about Ancient Maya and how their civilisation compared with the Anglo Saxon civilisation of Britain at the same time. In Science, we moved to materials, their properties and changes of state. In Maths, we learnt multiplication and division methods, fractions and began our learning of decimals.

Term 4

We learnt about trade between countries. We used stories from The Silk Road to begin this learning and moved to modern trade between the UK and China, plus looked at how 'Fair Trade' works. Our maths topics were 'Decimals and Percentages, 'Perimeter and Area' and 'Statistics'. We learnt dance and netball in P.E, about 'Forces' in science and portraits in art.

Term 5

We learnt about The Tudors! The infamous Henry VIII and his six wives plus Elizabeth I are our main focus. This inspired a lot of our writing in English, including a newspaper report on a royal wedding! (We have six to choose from with Henry VIII).

Our maths learning focused on shape - angles, position, directions and 3D shape rules. Our DT learning focused on where our food comes from and how it gets to our plate. Our science learning focused on plants and how they reproduce - hopefully, the children finished the term with a desire to develop green thumbs!

 

It is expected that the children read every day (where possible). We have a number of reward systems in class for the children's reading to encourage this. The most important thing you can do to help your child is to encourage them to read and learn to love reading. If your child is a reluctant reader, please dedicate some time to reading together as a family - this will have the greatest impact! There are significant studies showing that reading as a child has a huge impact on how much is earnt later in life.

Dojo points will also be rewarded for evidence of children: practising key skills - times tables, handwriting, story writing, reading, researching etc.; being responsible at home - cooking meals, completing household chores etc.; practising passions - artwork, music, sports etc.; being environmentally conscious - recycling, litter picking, growing plants etc.; and sharing their weekend/holiday stories - diaries, picture diaries, blogs, show and tell etc.
