Year 5 - Chameleon Class

Welcome to Chameleon Class!

Our teacher is Mrs Cole and our Teaching Assistants are Mrs Chongbang and Mr Webb.

Term 6

This term we will be learning about Climate Change. We will look at different parts of the world and discover how these areas are affected by climate change, both positively and negatively. Our investigations will take us from the UK, to Africa and as far away as Australia. We will also look at how we can make a difference to this ongoing problem.

Our maths learning will continue to focus on decimals, then on to negative numbers, converting units and measuring. Our art learning is focused on sculpture and is going to be messy and fun!  Our science learning focuses on the human life cycle, changes to the human body as we get older  and puberty.

Our main reading text this term will be: Animals from Farthing Wood, written by Colin Dann

This delightful story is based in the UK countryside and follows the lives of some animals who have been threatened by human development. It is a wonderful tale of friendship, team work and the plight of our wildlife struggling to survive alongside humans.

Please note that our P.E days this term will continue to be Tuesday (outdoors) and Friday (outdoors) afternoons.

The children should wear uniform to school with their P.E kits in bags on those days.

Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E kit, clearly labelled with their name and in a bag which can be kept in their locker. This must include a t-shirt in their house colour, black shorts or tracksuit bottoms and trainers/plimsolls.

Forest School days are: Monday 3rd June, 10th June and 17th June.

Be prepared to get muddy and bring wellies or old trainers that can get dirty. The children should wear their forest school kit to school for the whole day.

Homework will be sent home on Fridays and is due in by the following Thursday. A number of homework tasks will be set in Week 1 - the children are to complete any/as many tasks as they would like each week. Extra topic homework can be completed for extra dojos whenever you would like.

Term 5

This term, we will be learning about The Tudors! The infamous Henry VIII and his six wives plus Elizabeth I are our main focus, but we will look at the period as a whole to put it in context of our previous history learning. This will inspire a lot of our writing in English, including a newspaper report on a royal wedding! (We have six to choose from with Henry VIII).

Our maths learning will focus on shape - angles, position, directions and 3D shape rules. Our D.T learning is focused on where our food comes from and how it gets to our plate. Our science learning is focusing on plants and how they reproduce - hopefully, the children will finish the term with a desire to develop green thumbs!

Our main reading text this term will be: Running Wild by Michael Morpurgo

Term 4

This term, we will be learning about trade between countries. We will use stories from The Silk Road to begin this learning and move to modern trade between the UK and China, plus look at how 'Fair Trade' works. Our maths topics will be 'Decimals and Percentages, 'Perimeter and Area' and 'Statistics'. We will be learning dance and netball in P.E, about 'Forces' in science and postraits in art.

We will also be using the book 'We're riding on a caravan' to inspire our Silk Road writing.

Term 3

This term, we are learning about Ancient Maya and how their civilisation compared with the Anglo Saxon civilisation of Britain at the same time. In Science, we have moved to materials, their properties and changes of state. In Maths, we are learning about multiplication and division methods.

Our books for Term 3 are 'The Great Kapok Tree' and 'The rainforest grew all around'. Both of these books relate to  life in the rainforest - linking to our Maya learning. Some of our children have worked on The Great Kapok Tree previously - we will be using this knowledge to go deeper into the meanings of the story.

Please note that our P.E days will remain the same this term: Tuesday afternoon and every other Wednesday morning. Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E kit, clearly labelled with their name and in a bag which can be kept in their locker. This must include a t-shirt in their house colour, black shorts or tracksuit bottoms and trainers/plimsolls.

On a Tuesday, P.E kit should be brought in and we will change after lunch. The children will come home in their P.E kit that day. This term is Hockey, outside. Please send in warm clothing, gloves and hats.

On a P.E Wednesday (first one is Wednesday, 9th January) the children can come in to school in P.E kit, but must bring uniform to change into before lunch. We will be in the hall learning gymnastics, so indoor P.E is needed.

Forest School will be every other Wednesday morning (first one is Wednesday 16th January). The children should come to school wearing suitable clothing for forest school and for the weather. Please supply gloves, hats and scarves. A warm, waterproof coat will be needed.  Bring uniform in a separate bag to get changed before lunch.

Be prepared to get muddy and bring wellies or old trainers that can get dirty. The children cannot wear their school shoes in forest school.

Homework will be sent home on Fridays and is due in by the following Thursday. A number of homework tasks will be set in Week 1 - the children are to complete any/as many tasks as they would like each week. Extra topic homework can be completed for extra dojos whenever you would like.

Term 1

We learnt about Ancient Greece and Space, two really interesting topics. We wrote non-chronolgoical reports about Jupiter and diaries from the perspective of the main character from our reading books. We also completed an oracy week about pirates.

Term 2

We continued to learn about space and also what it is like to live on a volcano. We looked at the islands of Iceland and what life is like to live there.
