In English, we’ll continue our adventures with Drawing Club, just as we did in Year R. We’ll be using Drawing Club right up until Term 2, when we’ll set off on our next exciting writing journey—Curious Quests! You’ll hear more about this in the Term 2 curriculum newsletter. This term, our Drawing Club begins with the brilliant story Not Now, Bernard!—all about a boy who tries to make friends with a monster… but things don’t quite work out as planned! Alongside this, we’ll carry on with our phonics learning. In Term 1, we’ll revisit all of our Level 5 sounds to make sure we’re confident in using them for both reading and spelling new words.

In maths, we’ll begin the year by exploring place value within 10. The children will be learning to write numbers to 10 in both numerals and words, count on from a number up to 10, find 1 more and 1 less, and practise counting backwards within 10. They’ll also learn how to compare numbers by saying whether a number is less than, greater than, or equal to another.

Science learning will explore seasonal changes. We will learn to name all four seasons, describe the kind of weather we usually see in each, and notice how a tree’s leaves change throughout the year. We’ll also think about the different activities and events that happen in each season. You can support your child’s learning by chatting together about the plants, trees, and weather you see on your walks to and from school.

Our Historical Enquiry in Term 1 will be 'How have toys changed?' This will build on our learning in Year R when we talked about our favourite toys and games and found out that in the past there were no computers! We will ask questions about the past, compare toys from the past to our toys and we will learn how to sequence artefacts and pictures of toys onto a timeline.

Our PE day is Tuesday and your child can wear their PE kit to school on that day.

Our Forest School sessions will begin in Term 2.

Home learning will be reading (information about this will be shared with you in a separate letter), Twinkl phonics and the Twinkl maths app. Your child should have their reading book in school every day and should practice reading at home on a daily basis. Reading books will be changed every Friday.
