EYFS – Term 6 Curriculum Overview
Animal Adventures
Welcome to our Summer Term topic, Animal Adventures! This term the children will enjoy exploring animals, habitats, life cycles and the natural world through stories, creative activities and hands-on learning experiences.
Our Key Stories
Throughout the term we will be sharing a range of exciting books including:
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar
- Norman the Slug with the Silly Shell
- The Ugly Five
- Superworm
- Growing Frogs
- Walking Through the Jungle
- Hello Summer!

Communication and Language
The children will continue developing good listening behaviours in a variety of situations and explore humour in nonsense rhymes, silly stories and jokes. They will be encouraged to talk more extensively about the things that are of particular importance to them and be encouraged to ask a variety of questions to develop their understanding. Through our stories and classroom activities, they will connect ideas using sequencing vocabulary such as first, next, then and finally.
Literacy
Through our animal-themed stories, we will encourage the children to retell familiar stories, including using any repeated refrains or repetitive language in their story-telling, small work play and drawings. They will recall information we have read and learn new vocabulary and build confidence when speaking in groups. The children will also practise writing simple sentences using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
Phonics
In Phonics we will revisit Twinkl Phonics Level 3 with the children, to consolidate their knowledge of reading and writing with the Level 3 GPCs. The children will continue practising blending and segmenting words for reading and writing while building confidence by reading simple sentences independently. We will then introduce Twinkl Phonics Level 4 which explores reading and writing longer words, including words with consonant blends (bl, dr, cl, mp, nd) and polysyllabic words (windmill, bumper, sunset).
Maths
In maths, we will be completing and mastering number Weeks 26–30. The children will continue developing confidence with Subitise to 5, embed their automatic recall of number bonds to 5 and composition of numbers to 10. We will be introducing them to the rekenrek, before moving on to exploring patterns and shapes through practical activities and games.
Understanding the World
This term the children will learn about different animals and their habitats, including minibeasts, jungle animals and pond life. We will explore the features of each habitat and the animals that live there, finding similarities and differences and naming common body parts. We will also explore life cycles such as caterpillars turning into butterflies and frogs growing from tadpoles. The children will also investigate signs of summer and seasonal changes through outdoor learning opportunities.

Creative Development
Our focus this term will be exploring model making with playdough and clay, developing techniques to model and shape clay and dough using a range of tools and techniques, including using our hands, to create different models inspired by our animal adventures. The children will explore colour, texture, shape and pattern through our art, while developing confidence in sharing, talking about and evaluating their creations.

Physical Development
We will continue developing the children’s fine and gross motor skills through handwriting practice, outdoor play and ball games. The children will practise throwing, catching, kicking and aiming skills, as well as developing coordination and control.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Throughout the term we will be exploring change as we learn more about year one and talk about and express the many different emotions linked to change. We will talk about the similarities and differences between reception and year one, visit classrooms and get to know the year one teaching team. We will also continue exploring how to stay healthy, including talking about healthy food choices and how to stay safe in the summer sunshine.
Forest School - Tuesday afternoons

Your child will need to come to school in their Forest School kit for these sessions, with their school uniform in their bag to change into. Please provide them with old clothes, water proofs and some wellington boots or snow boots. With the weather changing, please ensure your child has clothes that are warm and waterproof, because the weather is always unpredictable.
P.E. - Thursday
Please make sure that your child wears their P.E. kit to school Thursday mornings. This should include shorts, a t-shirt and plimsolls/trainers. They are able to wear their P.E. kits for the rest of the day.
How you can help at home
- Read with your child at least three times a week. Every week on Friday, your child's books will be changed. Please sign the reading record so that you can let us know how they are getting on with their reading at home and so that we can keep track of what books have been read.
- Practise the phonic sounds we have been learning in class.
- Talk to them about school routines, such as putting their things in their lockers, lunch times, eating, register and tidying up.
- Use the curriculum newsletter to discuss their current learning and encourage them to incorporate what they have been learning into their everyday routines.
- Explore their interests through play.
